Stress Management Training!
What is stress?
Our bodies have an instinctive response to danger – the Fight or Flight Syndrome. This prepares us either to fight or to flee, with a number of physical changes, including increased heart rate, shallow breathing and muscle tension. Unfortunately, this response can also be triggered by many situations which are not life-threatening., and our bodies react powerfully and inappropriately. As there is no real enemy to fight or run away from, our physical feelings have no release, and we begin to build up stress.
What causes stress?
Stress affects everyone in modern society to some extent. It can be caused by overwork, changes at work or at home, relationships, unemployment, loss, illness, pollution or just the pace of modern life.
How do I tell if I’m stressed?
Stress can show itself in many different ways. These may include illnesses, sleep loss, anxiety, panic attacks, chronic fatigue and muscular tension. A stress management trainer can make a detailed assessment of your stress level.
Is stress contagious?
No – but others may react as though it is, and may tend to avoid those suffering from stress in case they catch it!
Will it go away if you take a few weeks off?
No – unless you deal with the underlying problem (the "stressor") the stress will still be there when you return.
Do only weak people suffer from stress?
No – anyone can suffer from stress, although it affects every individual differently.
Is a little stress good for you?
Yes, but it must be kept under control if it is not to become self-destructive.
Is stress an illness?
Stress is a natural reaction to pressure applied by circumstances and the environment. It is not itself an illness, mental or otherwise, but if it is prolonged or excessive it can lead to mental and physical ill-health.
The stress management course that I offer includes skills and techniques to enable clients to manage stress, anxiety and related disorders. It can also help those suffering from problems such as addictions, depression, social phobias and bereavement, as well as a number of physical illnesses. The course will enable you to take greater control of your own life and health.
The course is suitable for both individuals and small groups. It consists of eight sessions, normally run at weekly intervals. Each session includes a discussion topic and a relaxation exercise, a copy of which will be provided on CD for you to practise between sessions. There are also numerous handouts, including information sheets, questionnaires and logs for you to monitor your progress over the course.
